Whisky is a 4½-year-old intact male nova scotia duck tolling retriever.

Whisky is a fearful dog who lacked proper socialisation. When faced with unfamiliar people or situations, he may quickly try to create distance by growling or barking. This behaviour is primarily his way of protecting himself when he feels worried or overwhelmed.

With people he knows, however, Whisky shows a very different side of himself. He received training within his family, knows several commands and has even learned a few tricks. He is therefore very capable of learning, but still struggles to manage his emotions when faced with unfamiliar situations.

Whisky also displays resource guarding: he may protect his food or certain objects and can display potentially risky behaviour if his signals are not understood or respected. His future adopters will therefore need to be able to read his body language, respect his boundaries and work appropriately on these behaviours.

His ideal home?

• Experienced adopters familiar with sensitive or reactive dogs.
• A calm, stable and structured environment.
• No young children.
• People who can recognise his signals and respect his need for space.
• A gradual approach to socialisation, confidence-building and resource guarding.
• Time, patience and consistency.

Whisky is not suitable for first-time dog owners. He needs experienced adopters who fully understand his challenges and are genuinely willing to invest time and effort in helping him.

With the right guidance and a suitable environment, Whisky can continue to make progress, gain confidence and build a strong bond with people who understand him.
