Summer is a VERY challenging time at the shelter.
Our team is dealing with a constant influx of urgent calls. We counted nearly 30 on the last Friday before the holidays. “I’m flying out tomorrow, what do I do if you’re full?” “Do you want me to tie it to a pole?” “What should I do then?!” “What happens if I abandon it in the street—just a fine?”.
We understand that life can bring unexpected situations, but our capacity is limited. Taking in an animal is not as simple as making a phone call.
Our shelter is a limited-admission facility. This means we cannot take in every animal. Every available spot counts, and each animal we take in represents a full commitment.
We often have to wait for an adoption in order to have space for a new animal. And right now, there are very few (too few) adoptions happening. Therefore, we urge those looking to surrender their pets to take responsibility, plan ahead, seek foster families, contact other shelters, and wait for an available space—basically, to find alternative solutions if we cannot respond to your request immediately.
And above all… the solution is not to abandon your pet outside, tie it to a tree, or “leave it in a park.” This is illegal and inhumane!!!
